THE MOST FAMOUS CORNER IN SANTURCE
If you’re one of those tourists who’s always looking for non-touristic places everywhere you go, then we’re very much alike. I love luxurious vacation plans as much as I love discovering the places where only locals go, even though sometimes that makes me feel like an alien. But I like that feeling.
Actually, that’s how I met my fiancé, while I was hanging out in one of the most authentic places of Puerto Rico. A colorful authentic corner in Santurce, called El Watusi.
El Watusi is basically a kind of small convenience store that at nights becomes a bar, that’s something very common all around the island. It’s located at the Cerra street, most recently known for being the epicenter of “Santurce es Ley” the most important urban art festival in the country. This place becomes the meeting point for locals specially on Thursday and Friday nights. You can get your beer and just hang out in the street while listening to salsa among other local rhythms.
If you’re traveling alone, I highly recommend this place. There’s nothing formal to it and everyone is super friendly and very open to conversation. The vibe is awesome and even if you’re lucky you can catch a live performance of Bomba y Plena, believe me it’s a great place to begin the night.
Also, around Cerra street just a few steps from El Watusi, you can find a lot of cool bars and great restaurants you can go to after having a couple beers and making new friends. Believe me you will, no doubt.
