MONDAYS ARE MADE TO PARTY
Yes. You read that right. In Puerto Rico, you can find a place to party every day of the week, even on Mondays. That’s what I learned when my friends decided to take me there for my bachelor party. I’m not going to lie, if it wasn’t for the help of 3 Puerto Rican ladies we met having fun on the beach, we wouldn’t have found the places I’m about to share.
The perfect way to begin a Monday night in Puerto Rico is going to “La Terraza de Bonanza”. During the day, this place is kind of a small convenience store for locals, but at nights it becomes the perfect corner to get a glimpse of the best of Puerto Rican culture. From 9 p.m to 12 a.m. you can dance to the sound of Plena and Bomba, two Puerto Rican music genres inherited from their African roots. I swear these rhythms brought out an inner latin side I didn’t know I even had. Hundreds of locals meet there every Monday to give their weeks the perfect start, dancing and singing while enjoying local beer and rum (at a great price by the way).
After a very “boricua” warm up, at midnight it’s time to move to “La Respuesta”. This bar is most known for its “Lunes de la Respuesta”. On Monday nights, its resident DJ plays the best of hip-hop, dancehall and reggae. I was amazed at the big crowd of people just feeling and dancing to every beat, there were even break dancers and dancing duels! I was tempted to do a little breaking, but I kept myself from embarrassment and just enjoyed watching the show.
We partied hard until the music stopped, I can assure that was the most fun I ever had on a Monday. And of course, learned the best lesson of the trip: No matter what, in Puerto Rico all days are made to party!
