Never underestimate the power of two women with a rental car, a credit card and a fearless shopping spirit.

I feel the need to tell my story because I know there’s a lot of shopaholics out there (like me), who probably think their trip to Puerto Rico will exclusively be based on finding the most beautiful beaches and drinking Piña Coladas. Yes, I was a beach bum (and I even had time to go Superwoman style on a zipline and sail on a catamaran for a snorkeling day trip in Icacos Island). But I also bargain shopped.

by My Puerto Rico Experience

My anecdote has two characters: my husband’s co-worker’s wife and me. Our husbands had to travel to the island for a business trip. Since they were going to stay for two weeks, we both decided to spend 7 days with them out of the 14.

We didn’t know each other too well, but after flying together and spending a couple of days at the beach in San Juan (and a few piña coladas), we hit it off right away. That’s how we ended up realizing that we both love to shop and find bargains.

I saw an ad for one the biggest outlets of the island in a magazine I found in my room at Best Western Condado Palm hotel. I asked her if she wanted to go, and she didn’t even hesitate. We grabbed the keys to the rental car, a map, and headed to Puerto Rico Premium Outlets in the town of Barceloneta.

We navigated the roads like two pros with the help of Google Maps (it’s very easy to get to). We felt kind of like Thelma & Louise (except with the disastrous consequences)! It was fun. And when we arrived, it got better.

I was in shopping heaven! It has a huge list of designer brand stores, like Ann Taylor, BCBG Max Azria, Coach, Gap Outlet, Guess, Nike, Nine West… You name it! You can see the store listings here: I really loved that they also had space for local artisans to set up and sell their works. We found so many good bargains!

Two days after, we went to The Outlets at Route 66. This time, we went on a Saturday, and our husbands came along. It’s on the way to El Yunque Rainforest. We went clearance happy at Burlington, Aldo and Kenneth Cole. The husbands bought shoes on sale at Nike and Clarks.

The point of my story is: if you go to Puerto Rico and you need a shopping fix, you can’t miss these shopportunities to bargain. Caribbean vacation + Shopping = Can’t get better!
