AMAZING THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU FACE YOUR FEARS
While most people choose Puerto Rico as a sun-tanning destination, my reasons are completely different. I chose it as my dream diving destination. A couple years ago I decided to get my Open Water Diver license, as a way to challenge one of my biggest fears: the sea.
As crazy as it sounds, scuba diving has helped me to make amends with my fear of the sea. Maybe because it literally takes me to another world, and suddenly I forget I’m deep down on the water.
The archipelago of Puerto Rico has lots of world class diving destinations, among them there’s Desecheo, a small inhabited island about an hour from Aguadilla on the west. An exotic place me and my partner have desperately wanted to dive ever since we got our license.
So, after a couple days of relaxing at the Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort, we took a very early tour to Aguadilla, and then the boat to the island. As soon as I dived into the water, I was stunned at so much beauty, there were 150 feet of visibility, the clearest waters I’ve seen. The dive was spectacular! Speaking of facing fears, I saw sharks for the first time! There were reef sharks, nurse sharks and even dolphins. The corals, the vivid colors on everything are simply incredible.
If you’re not a diver, don’t worry. You can book snorkeling tours too and sure they’re amazing as well. Desecheo was a dream come true and Puerto Rico is one of a kind.
